How to tell kiln types apart:

  • Ceramic fiber: White, smooth, light
  • Firebrick: Heavier, porous, visible seams

Firebrick vs. Ceramic Fiber: Why Hot Shot Uses Ceramic Fiber

Firebrick kilns simply can’t match the speed of ceramic fiber kilns when it comes to firing and cooling. Firebrick takes longer to heat up and even longer to cool down, meaning artists must wait significantly more time before safely removing their work. This slower turnaround limits the number of projects that can be completed in a given timeframe. That’s why Hot Shot chooses ceramic fiber — for faster firings, quicker cool-downs, and more efficiency for busy artists.

Why do cracks happen in my kiln:

  • Normal stress from heating and cooling
  • Usually not a problem—minimal heat loss
  • Continuously hitting or rubbing against your insulation

Kiln Paper: What It Is & What to Know

Kiln paper is a lightweight, ceramic fiber-based paper designed to prevent glass, metal clay, or ceramics from sticking to your kiln shelf during firing. It acts as a reliable barrier between your project and the kiln surface, protecting both your work and your equipment.
Why Use Kiln Paper?

  • No Sticking: Ensures your pieces lift cleanly off the shelf after firing.
  • Smooth Finish: Creates a super-smooth bottom surface—no texture or residue like kiln wash can sometimes leave behind.
  • Convenient: No mixing, brushing, or drying. Just cut to size and place it on your shelf.
  • Time-Saving: Reduces prep time and eliminates the need for frequent re-priming like with traditional kiln wash.
  • Disposable: Typically designed for one-time use, keeping your kiln shelf clean and simplifying post-firing cleanup.

What to Know:
During the first firing, you may notice a slight odor—this is completely normal. As the kiln heats up, the binders in the paper burn off, which can release a temporary smell. This is a standard part of the process and not a cause for concern.
You may also see the paper change color, darken, or appear to burn away during firing. Again, this is expected. The paper is doing its job by creating a barrier between your project and the kiln shelf. Once firing is complete, the remaining paper will usually be brittle and easy to remove.

Whether you're a beginner or a pro, kiln paper is a fantastic addition to your firing routine, offering a mess-free, fuss-free way to protect your shelves and get beautifully finished results every time.

ALL HOT SHOT GLASS OVENS AND SHELVES REQUIRE THE USE OF FIRE PAPER OR KILN WASH TO PREVENT YOUR PIECES FROM STICKING TO YOUR KILN FLOOR OR SHELF.

  • Q: What power do I need?

    • Hot Shot Ovens are available in various configurations to meet different needs, each with specific power requirements. For example, the HS-24G Glass Kiln operates on a 240V, 30-amp service and requires a 6-30P plug type. It’s important to have the correct outlet and receptacle installed for safe and efficient use. Other models may require different voltages and amperages, such as 120V at 15 amps (standard at home outlet) or 220/240V with L6-20R plugs. Always refer to the specific specifications for your oven to ensure compatibility with your electrical system.

Please ensure you plug your oven/kiln on its own dedicated circuit or confirm available power before running.

  • Q: What are the differences in between your Novus Controller and TAP Controller

    • When picking out your Hot Shot Oven, you will have the ability to choose the standard built-in NOVUS Controller or upgrade to our TAP Smart Controller. (excluding Glass Ovens these are standard TAP Controller only)

    • The Novus N1030T SET & GO features a high-performance PID algorithm that ensures accurate and stable temperature control. With its straightforward "SET & GO" functionality, you simply set your desired temperature, and the controller manages the heating process to reach and maintain that temperature as needed. Additionally, it includes a timer function for added flexibility in your temperature control tasks. The N1030T SET & GO is designed to deliver dependable performance while remaining budget-friendly, making it an excellent choice for various applications.

    • The TAP2 controller is a state-of-the-art, programmable, full-color touchscreen controller. The TAP2 can store an unlimited number of programs and can be easily programmed on-screen or by using the free mobile app. All Hot Shot Pro ovens come with the Tap controller as well as built-in Wi-fi for the ultimate user experience. The TAP Mobile App allows the user to easily create and monitor programs in real-time and allows the user the ability to set notifications, view firing logs with by-the-minute data points, and receive push notifications about the operation schedules. The TAP controller also allows you to see maintenance schedules and offset a program that is currently running!

  • Q: What is the difference between the 2000F and the 2200F ovens?

    • The difference between the temperature range in our ovens are the components used in each build. The 2000F ovens support primarily Glass Making and Heat Treating. Most of the techniques that go along with these two industries do not exceed the 2000F. The 2200F ovens are more often used in the Knife Making and Metallurgy industries. Some materials may need to come to use this higher temperature range. Regardless of the oven chosen, Hot Shot Ovens are truly versatile and can be used for many purposes.

  • Q: Do I need to add the SSR separately or is it included in each oven?

    • All of our ovens come standard with everything you need, including the SSR!
